Córdoba

Córdoba is the second largest city in Argentina. Known as the Heartland of Argentina, Córdoba is home to more than 1.3 million people. Before the rise of Buenos Aires, Córdoba was the capital, and center of education and arts. Even though the city has fallen behind, it still has a unique style. This city lies at the edge of the Andes in the Sierra Chica mountain range alongside the Suquía River, making it a perfect place for picturesque scenery and nature excursions. Córdoba is developing into an urban city with the construction of many restaurants, bars and shops under way. However, the rich Spanish heritage is still prevalent with many colonial churches and buildings still intact.

Founded in 1573, Córdoba was created as a stop for the Spaniards travelling between Peru and the Atlantic coast. A few decades later the Jesuits arrived in Córdoba to teach the Indians. Soon after, the Jesuits founded the first university in the country, The University of Córdoba. The Manzana Jesuítica or Jesuit Block is one of the main attractions in Córdoba. This block includes the Jesuit churches, the university and a prominent secondary school. In 2000, UNESCO declared this a World Heritage Site and it is now known as an historic museum. Even though Buenos Aires' development has hurt the city of Córdoba, Córdoba still remains very popular with international students because of its recognition as having the first university of Argentina. Cordoba's Historic Quarter, located in the heart of town, features one of South America's most unique arrangements of colonial architecture. This quarter includes the Jesuit Block and the San Martin Theater, the oldest theater in Argentina. It opened in 1891 as an opera house, but now it's used for symphonies, plays and ballets. Another attraction is the Lakes and Ranges District, home to the National Beer Festival and the World Rally Championship. This area has scenic mountains and lakes, and a rich European influence. Sports are also very popular here, housing two of the best soccer teams. Basketball is also becoming very popular too.

Córdoba has something for everyone: a rich history still present in the museums, universities, and theaters, a stunning geography with many captivating excursions and all the amenities of an urban city.
