Program Locations

All our Bolivian volunteer projects are based in and around Santa Cruz, the capital city of Bolivia. Santa Cruz has a population of approximately 1.3 million. It is located in the eastern part of the country about 416M above sea level. The climate is generally warm and temperate. Santa Cruz is also the economic heart of the country, but has avoided over-development and has managed to maintain its colonial architecture and old-world charm. The easy-going atmosphere, friendliness of the locals and the palm tree lined streets lend to its warm and welcoming feeling.

Accommodation

We provide home stay accommodations for our projects in Bolivia. Volunteers will be staying with local families in the Santa Cruz area. All home stays are located in safe neighborhoods and are within short distances to your project locations. Volunteer should take into consideration that Bolivian living standards are probably lower than those of your home country, but the home stay will be clean and comfortable. A level of flexibility will need to be fostered on the part of the volunteer to adjust to Bolivian customs and the host family's life.

You will receive a key to the house and you may come and go as you please. You will be provided with a single private room but on occasion, you may be asked to share a room with another volunteer. All rooms will have adequate ventilation and insect protection, so there will be no need to bring a mosquito net.

Your home stay experience will be one of the highlights of your placement. uVolunteer feels that this is the best way to become familiar with Bolivian culture and practice your Spanish. If you prefer to have your own private accommodation, we will gladly arrange other types of accommodations (apartments, hostels, hotels etc…). Please inquire about alternative accommodations when booking.

Food

You will receive 3 meals a day with your accommodation. Food will be standard Bolivian cuisine. Vegetarians can be accommodated. All food and drinks served by your host family will be safe to eat.

Local Project Transport Arrangements

You will be responsible for your own your project placement transportation. Most projects are within short distances from your accommodation. You may be required to take a bus to your project location. If so, you will be accompanied by a host country staff or a representative until you are familiar with the route and travel formalities.

Activities and Excursions around project location

Santa Cruz offers a wide range of attractions and activities. A guided tour of the city is included in your program orientation. This tour will allow you to become familiar with the layout of the city and give you a chance to see some of the major attractions in Santa Cruz. During your spare time, you can visit one of the many beautiful cathedrals, museums, lagoons and parks that dot the city. There are also several opportunities to explore the pre-Incan ruins, 18 th century Jesuit missionaries and pristine forest area that surround the city. You may also decide to go swimming, visit the theatres, learn Bolivian cooking, join a local football (soccer) team or even enroll in a Latin dance class.
