I wanted a change from my everyday life. I wanted an adventure and that´s exactly what I got. I got the kind of stories that I´ll be telling for years to come, the kind that act as markers in your life. Before Bolivia, after Bolivia.

All the people I work with are fantastic and completely willing to explain things twice or until I understand.

How do I summarize two of the most incredible months of my life? I could write pages and pages and still would not be able to adequately describe the feeling that I have about my time spent here.

Once I arrived in Santa Cruz I met my second family. I have no words that can express the connection I feel with them. I was immediately at home in a country I had never been to.

My two weeks working in Alalay were amazing...the girls were instantly friendly and loving. They all wanted attention and love.

On my last day, I brought a chocolate cake for the girls and we danced to music in the afternoon. It was really sad to leave them as I had gotten really close in two weeks.

Deaf students tend to be underrepresented when it comes to volunteer programs so I was grateful when I found the uVolunteer project. I was excited to be able to help out in the classroom and teach using Sign Language.

It was easy to tell how much they loved having new volunteers around. New people to hug and to give them love. I went home exhausted each day, but it felt incredibly rewarding. I felt like I was making a difference.

I found the accomodation filled with welcoming people.

From the first day I arrived, I felt very comfortable with the host family.

It was a daunting thought that I would be looking after a class of kids and speaking only very little Spanish myself.

But after my first day I realised none of that matters, play is universal!

While karaoke in Holland is not so hot (and definitely not cool either) and you basically only do it when you’re wasted, here it is serious business.

My time in Bolivia was absolutely unforgettable. I volunteered on several projects, including working on English skills with kids at an orphanage in Santa Cruz.

It's one of my favorite places for a reason

After all, I was miles and miles from my home in New York and yet I felt right where I belonged.

I am happy to have this opportunity to share my story. If there's one thing I regret, it's not having enough time to do all of the things I had hoped to accomplish in Santa Cruz.

After three flights and a lengthy stop over, I couldn't help but worry uVolunteer didn't actually exist or that my suitcase wouldn't even arrive.

However after meeting Pablo, the local coordinator, I was instantly put at ease and any worries or fears I may have had quickly disappeared while driving to the volunteer house.
