The arrival into san Ramon was quick and easy!
What's not included: Flight, Visa Costs, In-country Transportation
Project Overview: You'll work in The Special Needs School of San Ramon, a facility dedicated to providing children with disabilities the help, encouragement, and resources they need to get the most out of life. At this school, children with diseases such as PCI, Down Syndrome, Autism, and blindness have access to therapy, special educational systems, and the compassion they need to thrive. The staff work hard, but they can always use help from kind volunteers to give the children individual attention and assist with classes.
Ideally, you should be passionate about working with children and interested in helping those with disabilities overcome their difficulties. Patience and empathy are a must as you help each child work through the challenges they face in daily activities. Classrooms usually have only one teacher, who will need help with many tasks and students who range in age from infants to 17 year olds.
What will I be doing? Your work will include helping with physiotherapy, art classes, music, language therapy, behavioral management, and any other classroom tasks. You'll provide sympathy and motivation to special needs children as you help them in their development.
Where will I be volunteering? You will be based in San Ramon, Alajuela. San Ramon is one of the larger Central Valley coffee towns and is set in a scenic basin enclosed by rolling mountains. It is a very traditional, unique and close knit town. National Geographic Magazine referred to San Ramon as having the best climate in the world.
San Ramon is about an hour drive north of the capital San Jose. It has the central Pacific Coast beaches located a couple of hours to the west and is located just south of Costa Rica's cloud forest belt and west of Lake Arenal.
San Ramon central location makes it an ideal base for travel around Costa Rica. Apart from its weather and central location, the people of San Ramon are some of the friendliest people you will meet in Costa Rica. They are genuinely welcoming to travelers, and are eager to make everyone feel welcome. The town has campuses of the 3 main Costa Rican universities; this ensures that San Ramon has a vibrant social life.
What will be my schedule? The project schedule requires that you work 4 days a week, Monday to Thursday, for a maximum of 6 hours per day in the mornings.

After picking up three other volunteers, we all proceeded to the dorms in San Ramon where we were warmly welcomed by the pre-existing volunteers, and a delicious Costa Rican meal cooked by the kind-hearted mother of the dorm, Dona Isabel.
I'll be at quite a loss back in the states if I can't find some plantains to fry!
