Aniek Woudstra's Volunteer Story

Program Volunteer Costa Rica
Project: Volunteer in a Childrens Home/Orphanage in Costa Rica

My trip to Costa Rica started on 31 July 2008. I took the airplane from the Netherlands together with a friend. Fiorella brought us to our host family and our adventure begun.

Our host family was very friendly and they made time for us to understand our Spanish and gestures. We met other volunteers and Allan and Fiorella, Coordinators of uVolunteer in San Ramon, gave us an orienation about Costa Rican culture.Aniek Woudstra

Costa Rica is a beautiful country and we travelled a lot in the weekends.

We worked for four weeks in a Child Care Center in Naranjo, a small town 30mins from San Ramon, and I liked it! In the beginning it was difficult sometimes because the children were rude, because they wanted us to give them our attention. But very quickly they understood that we would be coming five days a week and it was great to be there.

We played many games (which we bought in the Netherlands and brought with us), taught them English, learned Spanish songs, and we laughed a lot. Costa Rica is a beautiful country and we travelled a lot in the weekends. We went to La Fortuna with the other volunteers and that was very nice. We made a horseback riding tour, hiked around the Volcan Arenal (I even saw lava!) and relaxed in the hot springs.

We also saw the beaches from Manual Antonio and Puntarenas, and touched the warm ocean water. I did the Canopy Tour in Monteverde, This means I flew above the forest and jungle. Very tuanis! I had salsa classes and that was a challenge too, but nice! The food is very different from holland, but I got used to it fast. I liked gallo pinto, empanada´s, refrescos and capuccino frio!

This month in Costa Rica overall was a great experience, I saw and learned a lot from Costa Rica. It will be hard to leave. I will miss the children in Naranjo, our host family, the other people we met, the nature, food and talking in Spanish!!!
