Program Volunteer Costa Rica
Project: Volunteer Teaching Sports and Physical Education in Costa Rica
I want to thank uVolunteer for providing the opportunity.
I want to thank uVolunteer for providing the opportunity. My program got switched around a bit once I got here. I was given the choice to teach P.E classes at an elementary school with someone who had already been there. That has been great and my Spanish has improved a lot in my four weeks. I came here with little background in Spanish. It made my time here much more difficult than if I had known more Spanish. I think it is imperative to have good conversational Spanish skills before you come.
The kids living in the Albergue all have backgrounds in either poverty, abuse, abandonment, or a combination of these. The biggest challenge of my experience has been the language barrier. I never thought it could be this hard to even get simple needs met.rong>
The first couple of days were impossible for me. But over the weeks I have learned so much and even though I had a hard time communicating I would do it again in a heart beat. Working with children is a challenge anywhere, but I was still able to bond with a few even the fact I could not understand them sometimes.
Overall I am extremely happy I chose to volunteer with uVolunteer. The coordinators are great and helpful. I definitely plan on this being the first of many volunteer opportunities to come.
Thanks a lot.
