Program Volunteer Costa Rica
Project: Volunteer in Building and Constructing Homes in Costa Rica
It was quite an intense period of time so understandably we were really looking forward to settle into the volunteer dorms and start the building project for uVolunteer.
In those four weeks we had an amazing time and experienced some of the most memorable things in my lifetime. We hiked through the jungle at night, bungee jumped off an 80-foot high bridge, abseiled down waterfalls in Monte Verde and had surfing lessons in the Pacific Ocean in Nicaragua.
Once we arrived in San Ramon we were met by two of the organisers at the bus station who showed us the way to the volunteer house and made us feel very welcome.
The volunteer house was very homely which we welcomed after weeks of living in grimy hostels. It was good that we got there a couple of days before our actual construction project started because we had time to settle in and explore San Ramon, which was made easy to do after one of the organisers gave us a tour of the town.
The project itself consisted of building a home for a low-income community. I had not done anything like this before and was surprised about how physically challenging it was. However seeing the house rapidly forming and knowing that I had contributed to this made the hard work worthwhile. I really enjoyed my volunteer experience and would definitely do it again.
