It was a great opportunity to get to know how other people view the United States and see things from other people's perspectives.

Daniel Schmidth's Volunteer Story

Program Volunteer Costa Rica
Project: Volunteer Teaching English in Costa Rica

With uVolunteer I had the opportunity to work in the Escuela Sabana and assist the professors teaching English. The kids were very cute, the first week they would ask me my name five times in a row and then try to repeat it. In the hallways they would shake your hand and try to talk to you.

After school in the community they would see you on the street and say hi as they walked by it was quite precious. Night adult classes were my favorite. Here I had more control and was basically the teacher. I had two night classes the beginners and the advanced students. The beginners knew a limited amount of English so we focused on vocabulary and they taught me some Spanish as well. The advanced classes knew a significant amount of English and the class was treated more as a conversation practice course I would bring in poems or short stories and magazine articles and we would go over them in class. They would also come in with questions about phrases in English or about life in the United States. On weekends I was fortunate enough to be able to travel. I went to La Fortuna, Monteverde, Cahuita, Puerto Viejo, Manuel Antonio, Playa del Coco y Tamarindo and many other parts of Costa Rica.

I World absolutely recommend Manuel Antonio for catching a tan at the beach, or if you want some thrills do the zipline and canopy tour with eXtremo in Monteverde or if you want to see a volcano hopefully its good weather, go to La Fortuna and visit Arenal. To experience part of the Caribbean I would check out Cahuita or Puerto Viejo or if you want to learn to surf go to Guanacaste and visit playa del Coco or Tamarindo. These places are just a glimpse of what waits for you in Costa Rica.

The best part of my experience here was my host family. I stayed with a very loving and caring family who made me feel like home form the moment I got there. I plenty of food, actually more then I eat in the states all the time, my own room, cable TV, internet basically more then I had in my dorm room back at school her in Costa Rica. In my family I had a host brother and two host sisters and two very supportive parents. They also had extended family come in and out of the house all the time. My three years old host niece is adorable and had an awesome trip with her and her mom to La Paz to see dulce being made from sugar cane. Their hospitality and kindness made my experience in Costa Rica be unforgettable. Thanks to them and thanks to Costa Rica for the opportunity make a difference and not only change my life but the lives of others as well.
