Lindsey and Christina's Volunteer Story

Program Volunteer Costa Rica
Project: Volunteer Teaching English in Costa Rica

Besides being here in this unbelievable country and volunteering through uVolunteer who made everything so easy and fun - our lives changed for the better and we ended up making a best friend!

As we said our goodbyes to our families we looked at each other and both said...Lindsey and Christina

"We're getting some Popeye's chicken before we board the plane!"

We got on the plane and 5 hours later we were walking out of the airport in San Jose to complete chaos...There were people everywhere trying to convince us to take their taxi. Luckily, through the crowd Christina spotted our names and we literally sprinted over to the person holding the sign that read: Linsey y Cristina. We flew into Costa Rica a day early so it was pretty intimidating and exciting to see what kind of adventure we were going to experience! We got into the taxi and the first thing out of Lindsey's mouth was, "uh… there aren't any traffic laws here are there Christina?" He was driving so fast and instead of using a blinker the horn was the designated blinker. Needless to say we got to our hostel in 10 minutes.

The next day we were picked up by Fio the uVolunteer coordinator and that's when we met Jessie… We arrived to San Ramon late so Suri took us to our home stay where we would be staying for the next 3 months. We of course instantly fell in love with Dona Zulema and the rest of the family. We shared pictures of our families then went to our rooms and began unpacking.

On Monday Fio came to our house and took us to our project, which was a 15 minute bus ride with the most beautiful scenery that never got old. When we got to the school where we were going to be volunteering we met Randall who was quite nervous- may be even more than us. We met the kids and they were soo excited to talk to us and ask us questions which made us feel so much better. By the second week of school they wanted us to play with them during their break- little did we know that we would be playing "tag" with a ball made a rock and several layers of tape... No joke- these kids are intense!! They would throw that tape ball like they were pitching in a major league baseball game. A week later we got a basketball and tried to teach them something alittle less violent. We had an amazing time teaching those kids and it was so worth it to hear them say things in English- even when they said "good asssterrnoon" (good afternoon). They were trying and that's what made us feel like we had made a difference.

One our favorite parts of San Ramon was our daily meetings in the park with Jessie, our volunteer sister, for chocolate covered bananas! Another time would be when we made the perfect choice to go with all of the other volunteers to Puerto Viejo for a weekend trip. That's where the tri-pod official came into play! From then on we explored beautiful Costa Rica together and had the most incredible time imaginable.

Besides being here in this unbelievable country and volunteering through uVolunteer who made everything so easy and fun- our lives changed for the better and we ended up making a best friend! Thank you uVolunteer for the best time of our lives!
