Mandatory Spanish Language Course for beginners

Cultural Immersion Included
If you are participating in one of our teaching or community development projects, you MUST demonstrate at a minimum, an intermediate level of Spanish language proficiency. If you have little or no Spanish language skills, you must enroll in our Spanish language and cultural immersion program during the first week of your placement. This program includes 20 hours of Spanish language classes as well as cultural immersion activities such as group excursions, latin dance classes, cooking lessons, yoga, and classes in art.

The course is taught by professional ESL teachers at a local leading language school. Classes are no larger than 8 students and the emphasis is on communicating in Spanish from day 1. This certified program is highly recommended by uVolunteer; it is a week long program and is excellent for quickly picking up Spanish. During and after the language program, you will have ample opportunity to practice your Spanish in both your volunteer placement and with your home stay family.

This comprehensive package of classes and activities is available at an extra cost of $300 ($190 for the course + $110 accommodation and board in the volunteer dorm)which is paid in addition to your program fee. During the week long language program, the cultural activities and assignments set by the language program will occupy most of your time. Following your first week of Spanish classes, it may be possible to combine additional language classes along with your volunteer placement. If you would like to continue with your Spanish language classes during your stay, uVolunteer will gladly arrange additional classes on your behalf at a substantially discounted rate.

Accommodation

Volunteer house: We have a small volunteer house that sleeps up to 6 - 8 volunteers. Volunteers share rooms with other uVolunteer volunteers. Breakfast and dinner is provided Monday to Friday for volunteers who stay in the volunteer dorm as part of their program fee. The dorm has excellent facilities, a fridge, microwave and 2 bathrooms. The dorm is situated in the neighboring suburb of El Torito, Samara (a 25 min walk on the beach from Samara). Volunteer are expected to help with meals and assist in the cleaning of the volunteer house. We sleep on beds, sometimes bunk beds and all bedrooms have AC. The volunteer house is also available to be used on the weekends by volunteers placed in other locations around Costa Rica.

Home stay: This type of accommodation is available only in Patarrá. We use great local families who are all screened and are very happy to have volunteers who are there to help their communities.

Meals are included in your home stay accommodation. Food will be standard Costa Rican cuisine. All food and drinks served by your host family will be safe to eat and vegetarians can be accommodated. Washing facilities will be shared with your host family.
