Koforidua
Koforidua is the capital of the Eastern Region with a population circa 80,000. The town is centrally located in the country, thus making it an ideal location to plan trips to the Central and Western Regions (Cape Coast, Takoradi and the beaches of Busia), the Ashanti region (Kumasi), the Volta Region (Ho & Hohoe), and it is only a 45 minute drive from the airport and the capital Accra.
The town is set in a scenic valley surrounded by the awesome Obuotabiri Mountains. Koforidua is a relaxed traditional laid back town where travelers do not get all the heckling and haggling of other more popular tourist towns. The town receives many passing visitors due to the nearby Boti and Akaa Waterfalls, but few of these travelers stay in town too long, so the only other foreigners you will see or meet in town are NGO/aid workers or other volunteers based in the several projects in town and in the rural villages surrounding Koforidua.
Koforidua's town center has a very large market and it is also known for having the largest and best bead market in Ghana. Kofftown, as it is known to its youth, is also home to the New Juaben tribe, an exiled section of the Ashanti tribe that has a fascinating history of settlement in the area.
