Arriving in Ghana, I was exited to immerse myself in a new country and continent. My month stay in Koforidua was one to remember!
What's not included: Flight, Visa Costs, In-country Transportation
Project Overview: In Ghana, sports and athletics are a major passion, particularly football. The children grow up dreaming of becoming professional sports persons. While many have great talents, it can be difficult for those from rural regions to get the opportunity to take their sports to the next level. Without enough funding to keep competing for the attention of scouts and teams, these young potential stars are forced to give up their hope.
Our project is focused on bringing greater resources, encouragement, education, and coaching to the schools around Koforidua. As a volunteer, you will take on the role as an assistant coach and personal mentor as you teach these children about the sports they love to play. You'll also help them succeed in local sports competitions. Experience as a physical education teacher or professional athlete is not required, though we do encourage those with a passion for sports to sign up. Those with specialized knowledge of any sport are the most needed.
What will I be doing? After being assigned to one school, multiple schools, or a community team, you'll be teaching children and young adults practical and theoretical knowledge about various sports. Helping their teachers in classes, planning lessons, and providing unlimited encouragement will also be part of the duties. You'll play sports, and help them participate in a variety of local tournaments and competitions.
Where will I be volunteering? You will be based in Koforidua, a medium sized market town in the valleys just an hour's drive north of the capital Accra. Koforidua is the capital of the Eastern Region of Ghana, but unlike Accra and other more popular touristic towns it is very laid back and unhurried. Our home base is situated in a quite and safe neighborhood located 5 minutes from the center of town.
Kofftown, as it is known to its residents is a great location to experience why Ghanaians have a reputation for being kind and very welcoming. It is centrally located, making it an ideal base to volunteer and travel Ghana.
What will be my schedule? The project schedule requires that you work 4 days a week, Monday to Thursday, for a maximum of 6 hours per day. Your shift will be in the morning or in the afternoon.

Ghana was definitely a culture shock to me. I was not use to seeing goats and chickens roaming the streets or drinking water from a bag
Moreover the most beautiful experience we had over here is having the opportunity to teach kids from nearby villages and the ones who lived in the orphanage. It has been extremely exciting, because we are from Spain and the people over there don't really appreciate what they have. In Ghana, with only the basics we were able to teach and made the children very happy.
Our arrival in the country was a little bittersweet because, on the one hand we only received five bags out of 12 that we had checked in, but on the other hand it was nice that Nat and Gifty were waiting for us at the airport late at night.
Ghana was the most eye opening experience I have ever encountered in my life. Upon arriving, I was not quite sure what to expect, but I knew I would not be living a posh life.
I really appreciate uVolunteer for being organized and providing the volunteers with such a nice environment to live in.
My experiences with uVolunteer were great. From the first minute I was in Africa I enjoyed it.
