India is home to a third of the world's poor, 25 to 50 percent of its population lives in sheer poverty. The purpose of our volunteer India program is to support the development of the Santhal tribal people. In India there is a non-profit organization that provides services for the Santal Tribal Community. Volunteers will be helping the community by teaching Basic English to the children of the village. Volunteers for this project should be lively and love children.

Where will I be volunteering?

You will be living in the small town of Santiniketan in the West Bengal district of India, home to the University of Arts and Culture. Here you will find international students from all around the world. The town is surrounded by a variety of shops, restaurants, banks and internet cafes. Your project site is 9 kilometers from Santiniketan in a village in North Sehalli.

What will I be doing?

You will be developing daily lesson plans and assisting the teachers. You will also have a chance to help with the craft camps.

What is required to volunteer on this project?

  • Language Requirement: Advanced English
  • Must be 19 years or older.

What will my schedule be like?

uVolunteer believes that you should have a well balanced work and play schedule. This means you will only be required to work 5 days per week (Monday to Friday) for a maximum of 6 hours per day. For the remainder of your time, you will be free to enjoy the vacationing aspects of your trip.

Will I be able to communicate with family and friends?

There is internet and phone access in the volunteer apartment, also in the town of Sankiniketan, there are plenty of internet cafes and public phones. You can purchase an international phone card once in India.

What can I do in my free time?

uVolunteer anticipates and encourages your desire for travel and adventure. Your time away from volunteering is open for you to decide your activities. You may decide to take advantage of the local culture and spend time within the community over the weekend. Otherwise, there is ample opportunity to explore India and all it has to offer.
