Volunteer Kenya Program Locations
Watamu
The Watamu area of Kenya is part of a United Nations Biosphere Reserve, and so is an area of great natural beauty. There are miles of beautiful, mostly quiet, beaches with safe swimming. The coral reef is rich in marine fauna and flora, and offers excellent snorkelling and diving opportunities. Watamu village is essentially a Swahili (or Bajuni) fishing village that has grown into a small beach resort over the years. The village has several small supermarkets, grocers and the usual Kenyan style Dukas where you can buy all the supplies you need. There are also a number of curio and souvenir dealers, a butcher, fishmongers, a bureau de change, a post office, two doctors' clinics, a western hairdresser and several roadside eateries. On the leisure side of things there are a number of bars and restaurants.
Nyeri
Nyeri is about 150 km (a two hour drive) north of the capital, Nairobi. The city is located in the fertile Central Highlands of Kenya and is the administrative headquarters of the Central Province. It is well developed and is a perfect city for catching glimpses of Mt. Kenya. Farming is the major source of production. The crops that bring in most of the cities incomes are coffee and tea, and corn is the crop that will always sell. The Wajee Nature Park is located south of the town of Nyeri, and is home to the grave of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, a famous war hero.
Nakuro
Nakuru is the fourth largest urban area in Kenya. The city is located between Lake Nakuru National Park and the Menengai Crater and has around 300,000 inhabitants. Nakuru is widely known for the large amount of flamingos that live off of the algae at Lake Nakuru. The main species of flamingos at Lake Nakuru are just two of the some 400 bird species found in the area. This area is definitely a great place for birdwatchers. Nakuru is the capital of the Rift Valley Province, and has so much to offer, from safaris to the unbelievable vegetable market. Nakuru is a smaller city than Nairobi but has a nice warm welcoming feeling.
Nairobi
Nairobi is the capital and the largest and fastest growing city in Kenya. The city is located in Nairobi River and has a population of between three and four million. Nairobi is also the safari capital of Africa and a good base for travel in Kenya. From here excursions and safaris can be arranged to any of the national parks or reserves in the country. Nairobi is made up of many different races and tribes. The most favorite scenery for tourists is Kenyatta Avenue; here people come from all around the world to see this beautiful street. In the center of the town there is plenty to do and see and outside of the center you can visit the Nairobi National Park.
