Friday I brought the boys a gift from a friend in the states. They were humanitarian kits containing towels, a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, and a pencil. They were so excited to receive the gifts I had brought them. Some of them told me that the toothpaste tasted so good and that they would eat it when they got hungry.

We taught them about shadows and light and took them outside to trace their shadows in the dirt then went out later and traced them again. They had so many questions about shadows. A boy named Bruno asked me why shadows couldn’t talk!

There were no flaws in the program, and overall very organised. I made some lifelong friends on this journey. The experience was very rewarding and I really felt like I was helping. I can’t wait to go back!

To get the full experience of Africa, we decided to wash our laundry by hand. It was hard work, my back hurt from bending over and scrubbing, and my hands hurt from ringing out my clothes.

From the initial airport pickup, to the final airport drop-off, my experience within Kenya was extremely smooth, yet life-changing. I learned more in two weeks in Kenya, than I had in several years in Canada.

Teaching was definitely a challenge, especially with lack of supplies including only having one textbook for each class but I feel I gave it my best and hopefully the studLuke at Kenya Teaching Projectents got something out of it. They are very willing to learn which makes all the difference.

They seem to really enjoy learning about another country as most knew very little about it. In the form 3 class I also taught them ‘O Canada’ the Canadian national anthem and they taught me the Kenyan national anthem and that was a lot of fun. Its moments like those that make me very happy that I decided to come here.
