The goal of this project is to provide community development assistance to a Child Care Center in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal. Volunteers act as role models, help the children with their homework, lead recreational activities, aid in meal preparation, and assist the staff members. Often the children at the center are abandoned or 'given over to brokers' by their families, but there are also children who reside in the home who do not have parents. Your main role is to act as a big brother/big sister and provide emotional support to the Children at the Center.

Where will I be volunteering?

There are 3 project locations: Kathmandu, Chitwan, and Pokhara. Your placement is dependent on when you apply and how long you're staying.

  • Kathmandu: Placements in Kathmandu are just (30-45 minutes) from the main tourist area. Kathmandu is the vibrant capital city of Nepal, and has a wide range of restaurants, internet cafés, clubs, shopping centers, and banks. You will have numerous opportunities to explore the sites during free time.
  • Chitwan: The flora and fauna of Chitwan makes it a great place for nature lovers. Chitwan has over 50 different species of mammals, 400 different species of birds, and 65 different types of butterflies. More than 70 different species of grass grow here. The most famous wildlife in Chitwan is perhaps the single-horned Asian rhinoceros.
  • Pokhara: If Kathmandu is the cultural hub of Nepal, Pokhara is the center of adventure. An enchanting city nestled in a tranquil valley; it is the starting point for many of Nepal's most popular trekking and rafting destinations.

Project Testimonial: Ash and Kez, Australia

It seems that in the last seven weeks we had a life time's worth of experiences happen to us ranging from the good, bad, and butt clenching terrifying to the breathtaking (literally) and rather grotty (that would be the illness side of things, that you kind of just get used to).
