Volunteer Nicaragua Program Locations

Granada

The projects in Nicaragua are located in the oldest city of Granada. Along the narrow streets of this colonial city and the outside urban limits, there is plenty to explore. The department of Granada borders the northwest shore of Lake Cocibolca (also known as Lake Nicaragua), neighbors 5 of 15 other departments in Nicaragua and peaks at 1,345 meters at the apex of the Mombacho volcano, south of the city of Granada. Despite the apparent poverty you will encounter in the project's location, Granada boasts many natural tourist attractions, interesting architecture, as well as rich cultural events. When visiting this laid back city, you will feel as if you traveled back in time, with many traditional colonial buildings still intact, horse-drawn carriages and people in rocking chairs enjoying the breeze.

Like all cities in Central America, Granada is built around the Central Park and here you can find the cathedral, city hall, banks, many shops, restaurants, colonial buildings and more. This city's historical landmark is the Iglesias San Franscio, which also has a museum that displays the history of the church and its founder William Walker. A must-see in Granada is the Volcano Masaya National Park.
