The shelter house in Granada has 16 people in rehabilitation. This program is innovative and has been proved successful for about 5 years already, using a multi-stage treatment approach and a support group approach as well. The program is centered on improving individual self-esteem, building autonomy and skills for life. The program expects to receive volunteers from a range of professions related to social work and psychology.

Where will I be volunteering?

The Shelter is located in Granada. Granada is the oldest colonial city founded in Central America. It is the most important city in the region, not only for being the oldest but for being the best located. Along the narrow streets of this colonial city and outside its urban limits, there is plenty to explore.

What will I be doing?

You will be learning the multi-stage approach of the shelter, participating in individual sessions and group support sessions and helping with fundraising activities. You can provide sports and physical activities, crafts, music or dancing etc, as long as these activities are part of an individual social integration program. Volunteers can also assess the current organization's needs, and accompany organization leaders on the process of finding resources to improve/expand the work. This may include visiting both governmental and non-governmental agencies asking for information on ways to get further assistance on a specific need.

What is required to volunteer on this project?

  • Language Requirement: Intermediate Spanish
However, you can still join this project if your Spanish does not meet the requirements, by taking our Spanish language course.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • At least 4 weeks of commitment to the project

What will my schedule be like?

uVolunteer believes that you should have a well balanced work and play schedule. This means you will only be required to work 4 days per week (Monday to Thursday) for a maximum of 6 hours per day. For the remainder of your time, you will be free to enjoy the vacationing aspects of your trip.

Will I be able to communicate with family and friends?

Internet cafes in Barrio La Sabaneta give volunteers the opportunity to communicate with friends and family members. You will also be provided a local phone card for emergencies. You can also purchase international phone cards once you arrive in Nicaragua.

What can I do in my free time?

uVolunteer anticipates and encourages your desire for travel and adventure. Your time away from volunteering is open for you to decide your activities. You may decide to take advantage of the local culture and spend time within the community over the weekend. Otherwise, there is ample opportunity to explore Nicaragua and all it has to offer.
