The Teaching projects in Peru provide assistance to local secondary schools, primary schools, language centers, Universities, Institutes, and social welfare schools in Huaraz and Cusco. While onsite, volunteers act as role models, help the students learn English skills, lead recreational activities, and assist the staff members.

Where will I be volunteering?

You will be volunteering in one of these two cities in Peru:

Huaraz: is located 420km north-east of Lima, and is connected to the rest of the country through the Pan-American Highway (187km north of Lima.) The city can be reached from Lima Casma or Chimbote in eight hours. Huaraz is a Peruvian city located high in the majestic Andes in the central northern part of the country and is surrounded by remarkable glacier peaks and mountains of the Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Negra. The majority of the population is made up of indigenous people and is very conservative.

Cusco: You will be volunteering in San Sebastian, which is located just 20 minutes from downtown Cusco, and is the Inca City located in the Southern Sierras. Positioned in southeastern Peru only 80 km from Machu Picchu, it is known as the Archaeological Capital of America. Cusco is the most visited city in Peru and is a must see.

Project Testimonial: Jennifer Paskach, USA

Will I be able to communicate with family and friends?

Numerous internet cafes are located throughout the city. Payphones are also readily available and can be used with a phone card available for purchase in Peru.

What can I do in my free time?

uVolunteer anticipates and encourages your desire for travel and adventure. Your time away from volunteering is open for you to decide your activities. You may decide to take advantage of the local culture and spend time within the community over the weekend. Otherwise, there is ample opportunity to explore Peru and all it has to offer.

Great weekend trips include:

At night or day, Cusco is a city full of charm and attractions. Its main square, churches and surroundings are full of footprints from the past. Discover Qorincancha, San Blas, the Inca Roca Palace and many more archaeological sites during your trip to Cusco.

  • Cusco Main Square
  • Archiepiscopal Palace
  • San Blas District
  • Koricancha
  • Hatun Rumiyoc-Inca Roca's Palace
  • Regocijo or Cabildo Square
  • Acllawasi

Volunteers can also go swimming in hotsprings, walk through the mountains, go trekking to spectacular glacial lakes, go rock climbing or mountain biking. If you prefer nightlife, there is dancing in the many discos in Cusco center, which also has many cafes and restaurants where you can try different traditional Peruvian cuisine.
