James Cornell's Volunteer Story

Program Volunteer Peru
Project: Volunteer in the Orphanage for Boys in Peru

The two weeks I spend volunteering at the orphanage and taking Spanish classes the school were both challenging and rewarding...

Walter's patience and his natural approachability however made this week of lessons well worth it. Four hours is a long time for lesson particularly after spending the morning volunteering, but this was made less tiring by Walter's enthusiasm, and the opportunity to visit museums and walk around Cusco. I was particularly impressed with the schools commitment to students, the friendliness of the staff and the drive to provide more than just language lessons for instance the salsa classes.James Cornell

Ranging from the good, bad, and butt clenching terrifying to the breathtaking (literally) and rather grotty (that would be the illness side of things, that you kind of just get used to).

The orphanage is an incredibly positive environment, and it is hand out to be already wonder by the enthusiasm and energy of the boys. I cannot help but feel however that two weeks is simply too little time. Perhaps, yes, it is possible to contribute something in this time but it seems that all the boys, end some more than others need a greater degree of constancy in volunteers. Nevertheless I enjoyed my time there a great deal, and I hope to have contributed something if not a great deal.

Vanessa the volunteer coordinator's commitment to us and her cause is clearly outstanding. The in country support has been excellent, and in many ways it seems she does the job of several people. Had I been awesome of the existence of her program, and had it catered for the little time we had, I would without hesitation have organized these two weeks directly through her.

The opportunity to stay with a Peruvian family was amusable. We were made to feel extremely welcome and were well cooked after.
