Program Volunteer Peru
Project: Volunteer in the Orphanage for Boys in Peru
I spent two weeks in Cusco between the 7 of November and the 21 first of November 2008. During this time I spent two weeks volunteering at an orphanage and one week in Spanish Class.
My Spanish classes were with Walter with two others students (who also volunteered at the orphanage) and I found them great. I thought that there was a good mix of academic Spanish as well as plenty of practical practice. I was especially happy with the fact that Walter kept the lessons interesting by incorporating task of the town and the museum. I'd also like to praise his ability to always answer our many questions. However I would say that the lessons were in the afternoon after volunteering for three hours in the morning, this is a lot and I would have liked an option or perhaps 2 hours or 3 hours class a day rather than 4.
There was a lot of mathematics homework and plenty of origami. It was chaotic with regards to what happens when, numerous bells for a different thing but you soon get the hang of going with the flow.
The boys appreciated the attention I loved giving it, although I now understand why other organizations insist on at least 4 weeks I felt that the boys needed more continuity that I was able to give them.
I thought that the in country support from Vanessa and the other staff was superb. Despite many changes to our plans Vanessa picked us up promptly and adequately briefed us before leaving us two have two days acclimatization. Through my time in Peru I have always known that I can reach someone by phone which is very useful.
Finally the home stay was a valuable experience. Our house mother endeavored to make us feel comfortable in her home at all times and the food was delicious. I liked the mix of freedom as I wanted and get family atmosphere at home. In conclusion thank you for the help and support, I have enjoyed my time in Cusco.
