Volunteers need to understand that orphanages in Tanzania are a bit different from orphanages in other parts of the world. Because of the family-oriented culture, orphans stay with extended families, some with the neighbors and others stay alone. Normally there are very few orphans who stay at the orphanage centers overnight, most come in the morning and leave in the evening. When placed in an orphanage, one of the volunteer’s major duties will most likely be teaching. Volunteers in the orphanages help teachers to do their lessons, drawings, sports, games and sometimes assist with the cleaning of the dormitories and clothes. In addition to this they also help with the cooking of meals for the children.
Where will I be volunteering?
This project is located in the urban and suburban areas of Arusha. Arusha is a city in northern Tanzania surrounded by some of Africa's most famous landscapes and national parks.

Will I be able to communicate with family and friends?
Internet Cafés and telephones are readily available throughout the town. An international phone card can be purchased once in Tanzania.
What can I do in my free time?
uVolunteer anticipates and encourages your desire for travel and adventure. Your time away from volunteering is open for you to decide your activities. You may decide to take advantage of the local culture and spend time within the community over the weekend. Otherwise, there is ample opportunity to explore Tanzania and all it has to offer. Long weekends can be taken to go on safari or to travel further afield to places such as Zanzibar, Dar-es-salaam, Kenya or Uganda. If volunteers wish to volunteer over the weekends they can join local teams and visit other orphanages (or other children organizations) to spend time simply playing with and entertaining the children.
