Project Overview: We work with a number of elementary schools and high schools in Trat, Thailand that are currently struggling in their computer and IT skills curriculum. These schools suffer from insufficient funding. The computer resources may be there, but there are too few teachers to provide the individual attention needed for each student to learn how to work with the technology. To volunteer in this program, you do not need to have specialized training or a degree. A basic understanding of everyday computer use is enough for the lessons you'll be involved in. If you do have specialized knowledge, you can pass on your expertise through custom workshops and advanced IT lessons.
A Thai teacher will be present at all times to help in case of language barriers or technical problems. You will be assigned to one or multiple schools. There, you will be responsible for teaching the children how to operate Windows 7 and helping them complete their computer assignments. Class sizes are typically large, so your assistance will give each student a chance to have a personalized learning experience.
What will I be doing? You will be assisting a Thai IT teacher in planning and carrying out basic and advanced computer software lessons, helping individual students with their work, and developing your own lesson plans if you have specialized knowledge you'd like to teach. Programs you'll be working with include Windows XP, Word Processing, Excel, and Photoshop.
Where will I be volunteering? You will be based in Trat the capital city of Trat Province. Trat is located in south east of Thailand, a 4 hours' drive to the east of Bangkok.
It is a very safe location in Thailand and has a relaxed ambience; Trat is mostly known for gemstone mining and trading, particularly in rubies. The town has several markets and remains largely untouched by tourism so there is a strong genuine local feel to the town.
The weather in Trat is very comfortable and is generally warm for most of the year. It is ideally located for travel to Cambodia and to the islands in the gulf of Thailand.
What will be my schedule? The project schedule requires that you work 4 days a week, Monday to Thursday, for a maximum of 6 hours per day in the mornings.
