I have always been interested in experiencing new cultures and ways of life outside of my home in New Jersey, USA. In fact, my undergraduate major was anthropology.
What's not included: Flight, Visa Costs, In-country Transportation
Project Overview: In Trat, Thailand, many of the schools suffer from low funding, making them unable to afford to employ native speaking English teachers. Sometimes the teachers may not have full knowledge or mastery of the English language. With classroom sizes between 20-40 students, they may be unable to dedicate the one on one attention necessary to build strong skills in their students' English pronunciation, grammar, and conversation.
Your volunteer work will be in the elementary schools in and around Trat, helping to increase the quality of the current English courses. While Thai children are very friendly and eager to learn, they may sometimes be overcome by shyness when trying to speak this new language. Being a gentle encourager and source of knowledge will give the children confidence. You'll help them develop a firm grasp on the basics of English as they get to know you through conversation. Creativity and energy will be very important to this program, as the Thai teaching style is based on fun.
What will I be doing? You'll be working with the English teacher to create innovative and entertaining English lessons and skill building activities. You will be responsible for correcting and helping the children with their pronunciation, grammar, and conversational skills as you tutor and chat with them on a daily basis.
Where will I be volunteering? You will be based in Trat the capital city of Trat Province. Trat is located in south east of Thailand, a 4 hours' drive to the east of Bangkok.
It is a very safe location in Thailand and has a relaxed ambience; Trat is mostly known for gemstone mining and trading, particularly in rubies. The town has several markets and remains largely untouched by tourism so there is a strong genuine local feel to the town.
The weather in Trat is very comfortable and is generally warm for most of the year. It is ideally located for travel to Cambodia and to the islands in the gulf of Thailand.
What will be my schedule? The project schedule requires that you work 4 days a week, Monday to Thursday, for a maximum of 6 hours per day in the mornings.
Below are testimonials of previous volunteers on this project. Click though to their full reports where you can view their video reports, photos and you can also contact them directly by email to ask about their experiences with us in Thailand.

Overall, my uVolunteer experience was excellent. I enjoy traveling but I
like to travel with a purpose. It is fun to travel but when I travel I
enjoy volunteering as well. Not only do you get to see the country you
visit but you get to experience it.
Aside from teaching, the uVolunteer program enables you to immerse yourself in the local culture. My daily schedule allows me ample free time to go out and explore the town, meet people, build friendships with those I meet, etc. Meaw also makes sure we always have good food.
It was nothing like I had expected... As cliche as it sounds my time in Thailand was just that.
When I first arrived I really had no idea what to expect.
I joined this program as an English 'teacher' - and this teacher was also a student in so many ways!
We rented a motorcycle today! We rode around the island and went to a cliff top viewpoint overlooking the ocean which was very beautiful. We stopped at a beach and had lunch at a restaurant with tables right at the water's edge.
After recently returning from teaching English for two weeks in PhonPhisai, I can honestly say it was one of the best experiences of my life...From the time I arrived in Udon Thani and was met by Jack and some of the other volunteers, I knew it was going to be a great experience.
I found the children to be so shy at first, however they quickly warm up to you. Take your camera, plenty of photo ops! The teachers can't do enough for you. I quickly felt at home.
The kids and the people find it really great, but most of all interesting, that there is a foreigner in their village and that's something you can really feel here.
Teaching there wasn't always easy, especially in the lower classes, because their English is mainly limited to 'Good moooorning teeeaaacher, how aaaare you?
I discovered so much about the world and myself. Yet, there seems tobe something in my heart which urges me to return there one day in the future to rediscover the adventurous Joe, and to rekindle the friendships which I forged.
From the moment I arrived everyone was very welcoming. Jack's mom was particularly kind in helping me get settled. Over the next several days I began meeting Jack's extended family.
Thailand is our chosen destination for Asia. This breathtaking country is steeped in tradition, history, and exotic culture. Aptly named 'the land of smiles', Thailand has much to offer the volunteer traveler. Its rich culture, unique cuisine, and fun-loving people make it a great choice for an east Asian volunteer vacation.
